Series Review: Asobi Ni Iku Yo!

Never trust a woman with breast as big as her face. Or two sets of ears.
I can't remember when I've finished this series because I've put this review on hold for so long. Why is that? Because despite the very high production values and plentiful fanservice, Asobi ni Iku yo! is really boring.

Let me break it all down for you and even if it looks like a huge spoiler, I assure you that you won't even feel it. Huge-boob Eris is a cat alien that crash landed into protagonist Kio's house, and soon lives with him in order to better the relationship between cat aliens and humans. Unfortunately dog aliens are about and they are hell bent on making that difficult for the cat aliens, because... I dunno, it's a cat and dog thing. The main characters goes on their daily lives until the dog aliens went on the offensive, the cat aliens enter the fray, all the main female characters confess to Kio and strips naked, the dog aliens were defeated and it's happily ever after. Manami (va Tomatsu Haruka) and Aoi (va Hanazawa Kana) are... well, I can't remember their roles in the story.

The series runs on the romance angle between the three girls and a dumb ass who has no idea what the fuck is going on EVER, and fan service because the main plot is essentially rubbish. Now, I know that there are tons of series out there with essentially no plot to speak of, but Asobi ni Iku yo IS indeed trying to make the plot a part of the show's selling point, but has no real value whatsoever. It won't be so bad if all the setup is for the sake of creative fan service, but other than the unusually high quality, the fan service is not at all interesting. I guess it's mostly due to the unbelievably generic and worthless male lead that made all the "service" he's getting seems unjustified.

But despite how much I like their VAs, I can't speak much for the female leads either. Eris is your typical clueless ditz with a smoking hot body but has less character than the puppy in AIR. Aoi is an uninteresting character with the flattest female chest in anime history, and the only redeeming factor is being a professional killer. Manami is a pain to look at with her constant whining and dishonesty, although I feel that she has the best character design out of all the cast.

The only part that I enjoyed was the VA cast (even though Kana and Tomachan was kinda raw at that time), the high-quality animation and character design (which seemed really unjustified), occasional fan service and the songs, which was pretty good. The show totally failed in concept and characters, which is pretty much the core of any story you want to produce. It wasn't totally unenjoyable, but this show is hardly worth the time.

Plot/Concept: An unimaginative mix of overused themes
Story Style: Tries very hard, but still fail to entertain
Audio/Visual: Excellent!
Value: 5
