The weakest link in Hidamari Sketch

Let's take a look at the characters of one of my favourite titles, Hidamari Sketch. I know the defining traits of the characters are not always important in "healing" animes, but let's do it anyway.

Yuno

- Our titular protagonist and narrator.
- Innocent but extremely earnest.
- Not quite your average airhead, but she is fairly clumsy and often the butt of jokes.
- Easily appreciates the simple pleasures in life, which is responsible for more of the "feel-good" emotions of the title.
- Voiced by the not-quite-so-irritating version of Asumi Kana.

Miyako

- Everyone in Hidamari-sou is paired up, and Miyako's our Yuno's BFF, being the in same year, same class, and moved in at around the same time.
- Dirt poor, and but has an extremely outgoing and cheerful attitude.
- Lacks common sense, but has extremely high artistic potential, and surprisingly high athletic ability, especially for an arts student.
- Always hungry and begging/stealing people's food. Because most of the nutrition went into her tits.
- Like Yuno, she easily finds fun in in the simplest of stuff, even if some of which are disgusting/weird to the others.

Hiro

- "Motherly" character for the residents of Hidamari-sou.
- Known for her cooking ability.
- Known for her appetite.
- Also known for being extremely conscious of her weight, her many diets and failure to keep at them.
- Always positive and encouraging, especially for Sae.
- The most mature character in the cast, and often able to tell what the others are really thinking.

Sae

- The pairing character for Hiro, and in the same class as her. Sometimes she is regarded as the "fatherly" character.
- The "serious" role in the cast, often doing the tsukkomi for Yuno's random faux pas, Hiro's jokes and Miyako's antics. Often the one to point out the logical fallacies of others.
- Surprisingly easily embarrassed, for her (not implied) lesbian tenancies towards Hiro and obviously fake romantic experiences.
- And usually the most stressed out of the group, juggling school and work as an amateur writer at the same time.
- Has a tsundere admirer.

Nazuna

- She is literally Yuno right at the beginning of HidaSketch with all of her traits quadrupled.
- And that actually qualifies her to become a true airhead. Clumsy, often helpless, distressed, etc.
- Unlike Yuno, she's voiced by the worst possible version of Omigawd Chiaki.
- Silly hairstyle
- Actually not an art student, unlike everyone else.

(what was her name again..?)

Nori

- She has a computer.
I'm not a big fan of the new additions to HidaSketch. Nazuna is the epitome of a stereotypical character with a ton of exaggerated traits. I guess she adds to the show by being worst in art than Yuno, since she had absolutely no art potential at all. But everything her role could do, Yuno could have. I think she's just here to bring back the "clumsy innocent girl with little talent" gap left by Yuno after she graduated from that stage.

Nori complements Nazuna perfectly by having literally NO traits at all, except for the fact that she's the only one who owns a computer. Seriously, even her character icon is that of a computer mouse. MAL described her as "the most level-headed and normal out of everyone"... isn't that the role filled by Sae? Even supporting characters like the landlord, Yoshinoya-sensei and Chika are way more interesting than her. (Okay, maybe Yoshinoya-sensei doesn't count, because she's one of the most awesome character of all time)

It feels as though they exist only to fill up the numbers after Hiro and Sae graduated.

Fall 2012 Pre-season Impressions

Someone said that all the Summer and Winter seasons would be good, and all the Spring and Fall seasons would suck. I took it with a pinch of salt back then, because while I do know about the trend, it wasn't big enough to affect my anime habits. Until now. Spring 2012 was nearly unwatchable, and Summer 2012 had more stuff than I had time to watch. Well... depends on how this season goes, I might spent most of my time marathoning older titles instead.

As usual, the list of anime (and general order) follows Neregate's chart. Whadaya know, there's a ton of new titles, and most of them I know next to nothing about, so I'll only be talking about the ones I'll be watching and the ones I'll be avoiding.

Stuff I'll watch:

Jormungand: Perfect Order
Have I mentioned that Jormungand is my favourite title in Spring 2012? The season may be so bad that I couldn't even name the top three titles, but Jormungand itself made the season bearable. I've been looking forward to this ever since it's announced.

Hidamari Sketch x Honeycomb
Hidamari Sketch is one of my favourite anime of all time. It was one of the first titles that got the shaft treatment, and the creativity (and popularity) increased dramatically every season. That probably isn't even why Hidamari got as popular as it did. It's one of the best, uniquely entertaining "healing" anime out there, after Aria. Of course this isn't something meant for everyone, but having a 4th season just shows how good it can be.

Girls und Panzer, Teekyuu
I know very little about these two, but it's okay. Like I've pointed out in my previous post, dumb premises like these could be mind-numbing fun if you don't over think it; it's not trying to boast a good story anyway. It's not like I'll hang on to it if it's full of bad moé or comedy. Seems like Tank would do pretty well and Tennis would be pretty bad, but we'll see.

Stuff I'll avoid:
Battle Spirits: Sword Eyes, Chou Soku Henkei Gyrozetter, Wooser no Sono Higurashi, Monsuno, Oshiri Kajiri Mushi, Cross Fight B-Daman eS, Aikatsu!

Who cares?
Hayate the Combat Butler: Can't Take My Eyes Off You, Gintama, To Love-Ru: Darkness, Bakuman, Medaka Box Abnormal, Hiiro no Karera S2, Initial D 5th Stage
Sequels I didn't catch. Well, I actually went through Hayate and Medaka for a bit, but I had to stop before my brain decay any further. I actually (really) liked the Hayate and Medaka manga, but they are one of those that became absolute shit when animated, like Naruto.

Btooom!
It's one of those many, many titles that puts a bunch of people in an isolated place (usually an island) and make them kill each other, and the winner walks away a rich or a free man. I thought the trend died as quickly as it came, and this is a straggler that's still trying to milk a dead cow. I've read a fair bit of the manga and nope, there's nothing that sets this apart from the others. Except for a fuckton of rape, so unless that is your thing... well... I won't touch this with a ten-foot pole.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Jojo's one of the most famous and longest running title that somehow doesn't made it on screen. Can't blame anyone; Jojo's isn't exactly a pretty face by today's standards. And with that same reason I'll be avoiding this. David Productions have a way of surprising people's low expectations, but it's virtually impossible to win me over with this one.

Onii-chan Dakedo Ai Sae Areba Kankei Nai yo ne—
I think OreImo effectively spawn a whole new genre of incest between a guy and his little sister. It's a pity that literally all of them sucked. But of course, the rise in popularity means that it has its own market to cater to.

Suki-tte Ii na yo
I hate smut. Especially shoujo-styled smut.

Haitai Nanafa
So far, I've tried a fair number of 5-minute comedies. None of them were worth it, and it's unlikely this would be.

Seitokai no Ichizon S2
Although the first season ended in a pretty nice manner, I struggled to finish it. I didn't get all the references and it just isn't as funny or as interesting as Joshiraku.

AniBlogger Choice Anime Awards: My Top 12 Favourites of 2011

Unrelated pic... needs to be longer.
Getting my top 12 out is easy. It's true that the more anime you watch, the more picky you are when choosing the anime you rather watch then... you know, doing constructive stuff. I've only completed 30 series this year (including series I intend to complete, but have not finished airing), not counting the 19 series that I've dropped. After striking off the bad ones and voila! 15 series. I only need to remove 3. Here we go.

New Season of Hidamari Sketch? But after Madoka, I can never see Hidamari the same way again

I can barely read japanese, so here's my sauce.

I love Hidamari Sketch. It's one of the first series I came to love after entering the world of anime, and it still remains as one of the best series I've ever watched. It's also the show that got me into the slice-of-life genre and got me to watch stuff like Aria, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou and Sketchbook. And despite being an incredibly low-budget production in the first season, it also got me to love the way Shaft and Shinbo animate things, and got me to love everything Shaft produces. Well, most of them.

Then Shaft make Madoka. I don't know about you, but Aoki Ume's characters are so instantly recognizable, I can't help relating to Hidamari when I see Madoka. I don't think I can help picturing the Hidamari girls being in misery, crying every episode, with one character dying every other. Ugh, I think I'm expecting Kyubei to pop up at the Hidamari apartments asking Yuno to become a Puella Magi. (Hey, Puella Magi Yuno Magica might be pretty cool)

Hey, this might be what Kyubei looked like in another world:

Then again, Shinbo DID mention that he wants to put the Madoka girls in a slice-of-life series. That definitely gets my vote.
